The Grade 2 students have been doing a wonderful job both studying and showing the ESLR's in their behavior in school. The ESLR's are Vitality, Courage, Sensitivity, Intelligence, and Compassion. If you can show all of the ESLR's in your behavior, you are developing a Mindful Heart. In December, Grade 2 earned their third Mindful Heart Train Car by collecting 60 class ESLR Tickets! To celebrate, we had Backwards Day on the last day of school before Winter Vacation. We all wore our clothes backwards, we wrote on the board backwards, and we posted our schedule backwards. We found fun ways to do things backwards all throughout the day. Grade 2 has almost earned their fourth Mindful Heart Train Car, so we will have another reason to celebrate very soon!

Before the Winter Holiday Vacation, the Grade 2 students spent a morning with Ms. Ruth making Christmas cookies! The class learned the names of all the ingredients, and they worked together to make the cookie dough themselves. Once the dough was ready, everyone cut out their own cookies in different shapes using cookie cutters. The students made trees, snowmen, moons, stars, dog bones, hearts, gingerbread men, and more! Everyone decorated their cookies, and then let them dry. The next day everyone got to eat their delicious cookies! It was a lot of fun. Thank you Ms. Ruth for giving the students such a great experience learning about baking cookies!
QISS ended Unit 2 with our second Key Assignment Day. Grade 2 showed their knowledge of the states of matter with a Key Assignment presentation in the Lower School Science Lab. The students explained the differences between solids, liquids, and gases, and how matter can change states. The class also performed several experiments to show the properties of matter, including the fact that all matter takes up space (even air!), gas wants to expand, and examples of matter changing states. The class did an excellent job with their speaking roles and their experiments! The students displayed proper laboratory safety by wearing lab coats and goggles during the experiments. You can see more of the Key Assignment presentation in the picture gallery below. Click on the pictures in the gallery to make them bigger!
November is over and the first half of the school year is coming to a close. This was an exciting month of learning in Grade 2, with lots of time spent in the Lower School Science Lab, and a lot more writing in all of our classes. International Day was this past Saturday, and it was amazing! More than 400 people came to QISS to take part in the fun! Students, parents, families, and even some visitors were there to try delicious foods from all over the world, play games from different cultures, and have an awesome time! Our principals Mr. Page and Mr. Thorpe volunteered to have pie thrown in their face to raise money for the QISS PTA. Mr. Thorpe's son Carson threw the first pie in his face! International Day was a fantastic event, so we should thank all of the teachers, parents, and friends who helped plan and transform the QISS gym into an incredible cultural gathering. Also, thank you to everyone who helped with the performances throughout the day! From Kindergarten dancing the "Boot Scootin' Boogie" to QISS Middle School turning into zombies for "Thriller," it was an exciting event throughout the day. I hope you had fun at International Day!
